January News 2007 Happy New Year to you all. Two weeks into January and I haven't put up any news, so here goes; It started one morning, while checking emails and you know the rule "don't open an email attachment unless you know who sent it" followed by our motto " 'thought" isn't good enough". I 'thought I knew who this email was from. I went ahead and opened it, opening a can of worms literally. My anti virus is usually very good, but obviously this virus was having its premier. Since then I was driven mad as it corrupted files, prevented my anti virus form updating (or working at all), unable to view the internet, get emails etc, etc. and probably trying to access my accounts. On the verge of re-formatting my whole computer I managed to scotch it. I still may have to re-format as it is not perfect but at least its safe again. A lesson to us all. Last Sunday the 14th Richard took Jack and Mania (our 4 yold Connemara colt) to be measured, 128cm and 137cm respectively. The others can go to Kells which if known for more failures on heights as Jack is full up to height so we felt it was better to take him to Mullingar. Conan (our little 8 y'old son) went to the two Pony Club jumping shows over Christmas with the two new ponies. They went around the little tracks very well with no stops showing huge improvements. Each time we fitted three ponies into the trailer bringing a fiend of Conan's too. Getting set for the season ahead, getting the horses and ponies flue vaced, Our new farrier, Alex from France, getting shoes on as Richard hopes to get some of the stallions out to shows during the season too. Registrations to be done as we always leave this too late, and ordering a few stamps to fill in those jumping tickets that have to be done for every show. The horses are all well, just Cancun still has a big fetlock behind from when he cut it on the walker before Christmas. We asked the vet to check it, and he just said to give it a bit more time before doing anything, but at least he is sound. Out in the fields the mores are being fed hay and the new Uniblock Trickle Cool Blocks. They are 18kg of concentrate with fiber, soya etc. in a block, which the horse lick and eat slowly out of special containers. It saves going out to feed twice a day and so far they seem to be doing well on them. Richard took one of the livery mares up to the vet collage, she in so bad with cataracts that she is now blind and it was planned that she will be off to Liverpool for an operation as soon as this foal that is due is weaned. This mare is a full sister to Abbervail Dream. She thinks she is invincible. If you move them, she is the first to gallop into the field even though she can't see a thing, unless it is about 4" away, while you wait to see if fences have to be repaired! At least she does know the farm a bit I now. Lastly, we sent Cordoba off to be broken as we just didn't have time ourselves, and Richard spent two days brushing up on his EMRT again, a requirement to keep his licence, a good idea I think. Sunday 28th We headed off to Cavan for a pony training show with the two little green ponies, Limited Edition (the coloured) and Charlie, All clears except for Charlie who stopped in the Newcomers and began looking very much the greenest, but then started to go much better. At the last measuring Charlie just made it as a 12hh so at least Conan has one pony to do those first ridden classed with later on. Cancun and Cordoba are being vetted for the Irish Horse Bord classifications this week. Cordoba is now broken and riding quietly and Cancun is back in work. We have just purchased a new mare by the famous Clover Hill. We hope to breed with her but I will probably do a bit of jumping with her first, possibly in the amateurs as I think that is what I am now! We have a nice French student staying with us till the end of February, which is giving me (Heather) a chance to get into the paperwork, that is, by this time, well over my head. There is just so much to do in running a stud farm. I use Quickbooks for the accounts, but by now I am a year behind doing my reconciling, which is a real headache. I have a pile of chequebooks to enter into the accounts. Then I have to get those invoices out again for those payments that never came in. I always seem to get distracted, today I remembered that the roof blew off the tool shed, and as we have not had it a year, we should be able to get the company to repair it on guarantee........can I find the receipt or the name of the company? No, so after ages of searching I realised that if I just get the accounts back in order, these bits of information will probably turn up (along with a 'tidy up' of the office). Feburary News '07
We progressed this month by having the front of our house and avenue
surfaced, so the place now looks a lot better. I have been working
non stop getting our accounts up to date. Conan (our son) has been
going well with the two green ponies, and yesterday (19th Feb) they
gained their first registered points. We travelled up to Kernans
Its great to see Richard riding again; Cancun, Arkansas and Cordoba, getting ready for the stallion parades, showjumping shows and the two young guys going to their inspections. My mare is now too pregnant to ride, so she will be going out as soon as we get a field for her. Ard VDL Douglas is still in Holland till the season gets underway here and we hear he is very well. Thursday 22nd
On the following Saturday, 24th, I went to Clifden to watch the Connemara Pony Sales held there in the mart. Arriving the night before with my mother, now 84, a great companion as she loves to watch anything like this. There were about 250 lots of all sorts, mostly with papers and nearly all in good condition. I was the only one walking around with a measuring stick as I was trying to find a 13.2hh that would be a future pony for Conan. I didn't mind if it was a colt or a filly but I must have missed it. Maybe I was not just that determined. I had contemplated buying a 14.2 to produce, but prices were high and I was not brave enough. While I was there a registered stallion with nice jumping pedigree made €15,000, a very big mare infoal that had won in Clifden made €13,000 and a mare out of the same dam as our 4 y'old colt Mirah Mania made €8,200, she was also infoal, laving the in-betweens still fetching good prices leaving a number still not sold. I did see a nice little colt but was asked telephone numbers! On Sunday 25th we headed off again to the North with the coloured 'Limited Edition' and the lovely 'Lovely' for her first show of the season. Conan had a bit of bother with 'Edition' in the Newcomers as she ran out at the last part of the double until she realised what she was 'ment' to do. After that she was great, and with Conan divided in both the 12.2hh classes, gaining another four points. Lovely went .....lovely and jumped all she was asked.....Conan just got a little lost! but it was a good outing generally. We are just looking forward to getting our lorry back having been painted. |
